ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to produce descriptive case material on the application of empowering photography as a professional tool and creative arts method in social pedagogical work. The topic was examined via a literature review on the use of phototherapy and therapeutic photography techniques in general, and an activity-based study on the application of empowering photography techniques with a small group of multicultural women.
The participants in the study comprised four adult female Third Culture Kids and they assembled twice for a total of twelve hours at the Maria Institute in Helsinki. The participants had different degrees of experience and skills in photography. Exploration of family albums and self-portrait work were chosen as the empowering photographic techniques. Data was collected by the qualitative methods of participant observation, narrative writing, theme-based group interview and document analysis. The goal for the participants was to establish an empowering peer support group that would support individual identity and self-concept.
The results showed that the participants experienced the empowering photography activities as enjoyable and creative. All of the participants were motivated to continue friendships in a peer support group. The interactive discussion of personal snapshots and active participation in photographic activities also provided the social educator with rich information about the thoughts and experiences of the participants, which might not be possible to obtain using standard interview techniques.
The study indicates that empowering photography is a valid tool for the empowerment of individuals and groups in social pedagogical work.
